Name: "C"/Charles Eyler
Canon: Hello Charlotte
Assumed Canon Point: Hello Charlotte 2, right before the ending branches out.
True Canon Point: Hello Charlotte 3, deciding what to do with Charlotte.

History: Here and here!

Some quick, additional information: Charles Eyler was born to a rather ill mother and father who left him. His mother was forced to leave behind a daughter (they don't specify in what way, likely a miscarriage of some sort or they were expecting another child and she died and he did not), named Scarlett. The father apparently left over this, who was never named. [Post-app clarification I didn't notice until like, an umpteenth review of HC3 It's actually said by Charles that his father "killed her in his mother's womb", but how isn't clarified. So he probably forced his wife to abort the child.] Because of her issues over losing this child, when Charles was born, all his mother could see was Scarlett Eyler instead of him, Charles. She also fell ill to some disease; whether she had this before her pregnancy or afterward is unknown, but it seems Charles has spent most of his life from the time he was eighteen taking care of her mystery illness. Studying to become a doctor in hopes of making her life easier and being able to afford things, Charles suffered from numerous mental illnesses; it is suggested he suffered from social anxiety, potential schizophrenia, and delusions. He lived in his house most of the time, taking care of his mother, going to school, and just... doing his best for her. His delusions weren't bad enough he couldn't function until a chain of events began to happen.

You see, Charles' escape was writing fanfiction on the internet, and he was pretty popular on AO3. He wrote a story (and illustrated for it, too) about a girl named Charlotte Wiltshire, a self-insert of himself, essentially, his ideal, who he wanted to be. Because of its popularity, he met someone online named C, and fell in love with his stories as well, drawing illustrations for them. The two became friends and often discussed philosophy together. Unfortunately, C decided to take his own life, and Charles was unable to talk him out of it due to his delusional tulpa controlling him. All he could do was come to see C "off", so to speak, on the building he intended to jump from. They met in real life, they spoke--C told Charles his name was really Vincent... and Charles watched him jump.

After this, he became a wreck. His then-girlfriend, Anri, eventually dumped him, when he broke down on her and suggested suicide himself, unable to take the knowledge she was going to move. He didn't actually kill himself, he kept taking care of his mother, until her face became distorted like the rest of the world to him, a parasite, filthy. Unable to take everything, to take how bad his delusions and the pain had gotten, Charles walked into the ocean and then drowned himself. From that, the world of Hello Charlotte was created--his world, from his fanfictions, from his mind. C believed that when you died, a world exploded out of you of all the fiction and things you thought, and indeed, that is what happened with Charles. A world given shape of his own mind, in which he was the God... and he was appeasing an audience. ... AKA, us! Yes, HC leans on the fourth wall quite a bit.

Personality: Obsession. It's a heavy word. But I would say it's a word that Charles Eyler knows well. "If you don't do __, you won't pass the Trial", Scarlett Eyler, his own personal demon, would tell him. You see, Charles Eyler was a sick man in life, haunted by his mother refusing to acknowledge him as himself, and by his imperfections. Wash your hands ten times. Straighten out that stack of papers. Cut yourself three times to pay for being late. You can't have a pet because Scarlett told you so. You can't do this, you can't do that, punish yourself like this, hurt yourself like that. If it was bad, Charles probably did it to himself obsessively, trying to appease Scarlett Eyler, his dead ghost-sister, that was unborn. She always spoke of the Trial, what would happen after you died. Whatever it was, Charles didn't know, but it sounded awful.

Charles spent his time studying to become a doctor, to try to take care of his mother, and because Scarlett thought he should be one. Doctors were good, useful. Something she approved of. But what he really enjoyed most in life, what he was most passionate about, were two things: writing and drawing. Fiction. He consumed all manner of books and fanfiction, on the internet and in paper, and he adored these things. Chambers of human thought, deep and insightful, or perhaps even a bit silly. And so the concept of his own writing was born, and eventually, he became an artist and a fanfiction writer. He was truly passionate about this. Eventually, he got treatment help for his condition. He took pills, and Scarlett Eyler would disappear. He could do what he loved.

And Charles is immensely passionate about writing and art and philosophical debate, perhaps more than most his age. The human psyche is of great importance to him, and he loves plumbing its depths. The things he writes are catharsis to himself, yes, but he also writes to explore the twisted insanities his mind can come up with. He knows he has a unique perspective on the world, and it is wholly his own. He does not mind sharing it. Others seem to agree, considering he's apparently gotten a lot of kudos on his work. It's violent, but it needs to be for him. Because outside, in the True Realm, Charles isn't... well, violent.

Charles is not the kind of person who is... how you'd say... physically strong. Perhaps not even mentally, in ways. If he were beaten up, he would just allow the offenders to continue to hit him until they decided they were finished, and moved on. He is used to bullying. He knows it will stop. He is a passive person, an inactive sort. He is an observer by nature, more a watcher than a doer, and does not like the idea of conflict. Conflict scares him. Conflict is Scarlett. He is not Scarlett Eyler; that is why the Scarlett in his stories is what he wished she was, after all. In fact, Charles desires inaction so much that a part of him sort of split off when he entered the House, a more proactive, more nihilistic, lackadaisical part of him. It took all the power of the "God" on its own, and became the "Devil" to his God, running amok in his creation and doing what he refused to do as he sat around. Charles detests movement. He is afraid of it, deep down, even if he might play it off and pretend to be fine.

Another problem Charles has is that he is prone to being sardonic, and smiling things off. He is the very definition of "Stepford Smiler", to the point that his actual body has a hard time looking... normal, or not creepy. It is a reflex developed from his life. He must always appear put-together and calm and happy. He never raises his voice, almost ever. He tries not to be angry. Anger is dangerous. As a result of this, he's developed an almost unsettlingly never ruffled sort of demeanor, where it seems like he always knows a little too much, or is much too calm about everything, even if deep down he's panicking. It's rarer to see him unsettled, so it has to be something truly bothersome to get to him and cause him a panic attack. He's gotten very good at hiding his symptoms.

As God of the House, Charles possesses whomever he pleases, often the vessel is Vincent, his dead friend. Charles cannot bear to let him go, some part of him clinging desperately to the past. Vincent will always strive to kill himself, because that is what happened in life, and so Charles always ends up burying the Vincents he creates more of, but he cannot stop, and he cannot let him go, and so he often takes his appearance on, perhaps in some twisted facsimile of care for him. His version of Anri in the house is often petty and cruel, as well; he is incapable of forgiving her for what she did to him, to some extent. Or she is otherwise bullied, perhaps in a way getting back for what happened to him. Everything in the House is shaped by Charles' thoughts, and you can see how nihilistic and dark they are by how many meat grinders and generally terrible things exist inside these spaces at times. His main character routinely murders people. The version of his mother inside the House is an amalgamate monster that just spits out Charlottes forever. The House's occupants are almost all addicted to soap to cope with the horrible trauma they endured in their previous lives.

And then there's Charlotte herself. Q84 is his favorite Charlotte, the most perfect one he's ever had, perhaps, next to Scarlett. She's pure, as Charles puts it. He views her as "clean", and he has a fond relationship with her, as a father to a daughter. She even calls him father at points, and he cares deeply for her, even if the two often have sardonic conversations. Charles is willing to risk all to revive her and save her. He loves her. Scarlett is more complicated, but he realizes she is not his tulpa anymore, she is her own person, now; she is innocent, and clearly not malicious. As much as he wanted to get revenge on her and hurt her as badly as he'd been hurt, when he came to her level of the House, he could not bring himself to do it. She met him by saving his life, and it was that chain reaction of events that caused the hate in his heart to melt. Perhaps he is simply too weak to cute girls he wishes he could be like.

... On that note, Charles is canonly stated to be genderfluid. There are plenty of times he possesses female vessels for his use, though usually he goes by he/him pronouns, as his actual body is male, after all. He is also asexual. As unfortunate as it is, there are many signs his fluidity may not come from a happy place. It's likely the way his mother treated him caused him to internalize his body as "incorrect". This is supported by how many characters have physical deformities that needed "fixing" in his stories, and by the fact his self-insert protagonist is an idealized 'girl' version of himself, cutesy, everything his mother could want. He doesn't want to be a tall, neat freak boy, he wants to be a cute, messy girl, allowed to just be herself. While he doesn't hate the idea of being male completely (he is often seen possessing Vincent), he's more attached to the idea of cute girls and being like Charlotte. His avatar online is even a picture of her, and he even roleplays as Charlotte and talks like her.

His sense of humor is... odd. He finds gallows humor to be amusing, and he is rather snarky. Of course, he's a troll on the best of days, and loves puzzles and mind-bending things. He enjoys philosophy and long talks, naturally. If given half the chance, he would probably possess someone you know mid-conversation with them just to interject and annoy you. You could be bleeding on the floor and he'd probably still tell you to go bandage yourself, because, well, he's squeamish... despite studying to become a doctor.

On the subject of his mysophobia, it's actually related deep down to his own psychological trauma. Charles see most people in the world as warped, hideous parasitic creatures, with dripping mouths and distorted features. At least, he did. He doesn't seem to in the House anymore, likely because he killed himself, ending some of his mental illness suffering, but while he was alive, he was tormented by this issue. Only a few people in his life appeared like normal people, such as Vincent and Anri (until she dumped him). People he views as "pure" or good to him seem to not appear this way, but if Charles views them as awful in some manner, they take on this appearance to him. He knows it's a delusion, but he can't do anything about it. He even expresses when he's with Vincent that he's glad he doesn't see him as a hideous parasite. This problem dogged him everywhere, but in the House, he seems much happier. It's worth noting that in the second House, Charlotte's meds seem to be Abilify, which means we can extrapolate that Charles was probably taking that for his schizophrenia, anxiety, and depression. His mysophobia stems largely from his distorted view of the world, so he constantly is scrubbing himself clean of social interaction, literally viewing people as parasites dripping with filth. To Charles, the world is dirty and painful, and he doesn't want to touch it.

In all, Charles is... a deeply wounded individual. He has a lot of trauma from his childhood and everything prior to his death. He is trying to work past it, but he has... not really, truly been able to do so. A lot of this has caused him to develop multiple problems, the worst of which is his mysophobia nowadays. He panics badly when anything even resembling Scarlett Eyler enters the picture, and he doesn't deal well with not having gloves. His sense of humor is... a bit off-putting, and he can be a little bit of a creeper. He MEANS well most times, and even has a fatherly streak a mile wide, but more often than not, he's probably going to weird someone out with his odd terminology and how strange he is. I mean, who'd believe he's a God? A God, someone like him? He's a total loser.

SOME HEADCANONS:

- Since Charles is asexual, he doesn't exactly 'get' the appeal of sexual activities for elongated periods and thinks it would be more productive to do something else.
- His fixation on people eating soap was because he frequently washed his own mouth out with it when he was younger, because of Scarlett
- He finds magcats cute, despite hating anything germ-like.
- Black and white aren't really his favorite colors, he's just used to wearing them. He actually likes the color yellow, which is the color of the ribbon he puts on Charlotte.
- When he first woke up in the house, he was entirely soaked
- Being in bathtubs is hard for him for multiple reasons, mostly due to invasive thoughts
- He's too scrawny to lift much weight, so it's hard burying all those dead Vincents
- His favorite music genre is classical, but he likes anime soundtracks and j-pop too
- He loves anime
- He likes wearing cute dresses
- He really hates his name
- He doesn't understand the appeal of dogs
- Eating is difficult for him, for multiple reasons. When he can eat, he prefers foods that are comforting (warm stuff), or tactilely okay. Stuff that's slimy is right out unless it's dessert
- He spent a lot of time on the internet, so he's a filthy memer
- He was traumatized by Vincent's death badly enough that heights really fuck him up, and so does the idea of finding a body and telling someone about it :)
- He can play the violin
- He doesn't celebrate his birthday because he doesn't actually know when it is, and it's a sore spot. All his mother cared about was Scarlett's birthday
- He is totally trash that has an anime waifu (it's Charlotte)
- He loves politics and will talk for fucking hours about it to the point of ignoring other people trying to talk to him to talk about that instead; same with philosophical debates
- He is often glued to technology (or was in life) because it allowed him to be online and talk to friends
- He had a tumblr

Memories: In no particular order.
1. Anri breaking up with him, and her turning all garbled in his vision.
2. The fact Charlotte abstained from voting for him.
3. That he's technically the God of the House. He'll just know he's God of some Nebulous Place.
4. Who Q84 is. Just, all of her. Forgetting her entirely.
5. Scarlett Eyler becoming Charlotte Wiltshire.

Possessions:
Clothes: A black turtleneck, a black pair of gloves, a white shirt underneath, a black pair of pants, some white socks, and a black pair of loafers. Also, a black hair ribbon. And that's it. (Feel free to chop this list up.)
Pills: His pills from the True Realm. How did those get here? They're a strong prescription... it says "Abilify" on the bottle.
Cleaning supplies: Hand sanitizer, hand sanitizer to go, towelettes. A pair of rubber gloves.
Drawing stuff: Sketchbook, pencils, etc.
Writing stuff: Notebook, mechanical pencils of the yellow and pink variety.
Books: A copy of each book of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series.
Photograph: A photo of ~someone~ and Charlotte Wiltshire.

Physiology: Completely human, aside from the fact he is the God of his world and can possess people at his leisure.

Motives: He would absolutely kill to return to his "heavenly body"... or allow someone to kill HIM for the same reason. He doesn't need much of a motive more than that, to be frank. As long as the idea of ascending back to where he belongs is in the picture, he won't care.

Sample: Here and here!

Killer or Victim Consideration: Would certainly make a better victim because he's always "destined to die", as it were. God doesn't belong in a meat suit! He could, however, be persuaded to kill if it meant protecting someone he got attached to.

Fabricator Consideration: C has always been a crafty bastard and a liar at the best of times, working behind the scenes as the God of his world to try and help Charlotte. Working behind the scenes as the Fabricator wouldn't really be any different to him, as long as he was given a pair of gloves to do the job that weren't gigantic. He has little problem with gore and blood, he just dislikes touching it. However, despite that, he's very very smart. He would have no trouble figuring out how to tamper with things.
